The changing season seemed to warm Jeremiah’s heart. As soon as the roads were the most passable, they planned a trip to Fort Fetterman. Sarah agreed to watch Nora for the three days they would be gone, and Hetty easily expressed enough milk to last until they returned.

They took off shortly after sunrise and made it to the fort by late afternoon. The general store was still open, and Hetty had a chance to purchase some lovely gingham material for Sarah, herself, and the three girls. Then she bought broadcloth to make some pants for Jeremiah, denim for chore clothes, and some cute notions. If anything, she knew how to sew. She didn’t know whether Jeremiah even realized she had made the dress she was wearing. She hoped that the things she sewed with the new fabric would make a favorable impression on him.
